Building Your Career as an Expat in the Netherlands

Moving to the Netherlands for work is exciting, but building a lasting career here is a different challenge from simply landing your first contract. The Dutch labour market rewards people who understand how it actually works: the directness, the importance of networks, and the cultural expectations that rarely make it into a job description. Here is what you need to know to grow your career as an international professional.

The Dutch job market in brief

The Netherlands continues to attract international talent in technology, engineering, finance, life sciences, logistics and creative industries. Demand remains strong in roles that are hard to fill locally, which is exactly why the highly skilled migrant route exists. English is widely spoken in international companies, scale-ups and many corporates, so a lack of Dutch is rarely a hard barrier at the start of your career.

That said, the market is competitive. Salaries are solid, but the cost of living, especially housing in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague, is high. Knowing your worth and being able to talk about it clearly matter.

Networking is not optional

If there is one cultural lesson worth learning early, it is that many Dutch opportunities travel through networks rather than job boards. Referrals carry real weight. Practical ways to build yours:

  • Attend meetups and industry events. Sectors like tech and design have active communities in every major city.

  • Use LinkedIn actively. Dutch recruiters and hiring managers are responsive there, and a clear, up-to-date profile does a lot of work for you.

  • Lean on expat communities. International hubs, employer networks and alumni groups are full of people who were once exactly where you are.

A warm introduction will almost always outperform a cold application.

Understand Dutch workplace culture

Dutch professional culture is famously direct. Feedback is given plainly and is not meant personally; learning to give and receive it calmly will help you fit in fast. A few other norms worth knowing:

- Flat hierarchies. Junior staff are expected to share opinions, and disagreeing with a manager (respectfully) is normal.
- Work-life balance is taken seriously. Part-time work is common and respected, and long hours are not seen as a badge of honour.
- Consensus and the "polder model." Decisions are often made by talking things through until everyone is on board. Patience pays off.
- Punctuality and planning. Meetings start on time, and agendas are real. Vague "let's see how it goes" energy is less appreciated.

Should you learn Dutch?

You can build an international career here without fluent Dutch, but learning the language opens doors. It signals commitment, widens your job options beyond English-speaking employers, and makes daily life smoother. Even reaching a conversational level can shift how colleagues and clients see you. Many employers will support language courses, so it is worth asking.

Salary, growth and switching jobs

When negotiating, remember that Dutch salaries are usually quoted as gross annual figures and that an 8% holiday allowance (*vakantiegeld*) is typically paid on top. If you are on a highly skilled migrant permit, any new role must continue to meet the IND salary threshold, and changing employers means the threshold in force on the start date of your new contract applies. Plan job moves with that in mind so a switch never accidentally puts your residence permit at risk.

For longer-term growth, treat the Netherlands as a place to specialise. The professionals who thrive here tend to develop scarce, in-demand expertise, stay visible in their field, and keep their network warm even when they are not job hunting.
