How do you apply for a DigiD in the Netherlands?

If you’re moving to the Netherlands as a highly skilled migrant or international student, one of the first things you should do after obtaining your BSN (Citizen Service Number) is apply for a DigiD.

What Is a DigiD?

A DigiD (Digital Identification) is an online verification system that allows individuals in the Netherlands to securely access government websites, healthcare services, tax portals, and financial benefits. It acts as a digital passport and is directly linked to your BSN (Citizen Service Number).

With a DigiD, you can:

  • File taxes via Belastingdienst (Dutch Tax Office)

  • Access your health records and medical appointments.

  • Apply for benefits and allowances (such as housing or healthcare allowances)

How to Apply for a DigiD (Step-by-Step Guide)

Step 1: Visit the Official DigiD Website

Go to the official DigiD website: www.digid.nl

  • Click on the English option for more straightforward navigation.

  • Select "Apply" to start the registration process.

Step 2: Fill Out Your Details

You will be asked to enter:

  • Your BSN (Citizen Service Number)

  • Your Date of Birth

  • Your Dutch postal code and house number

Step 3: Create Your DigiD Credentials

  • Choose a username (case-sensitive and without spaces).

  • Create a strong password and confirm it.

  • Set up SMS verification or DigiD app authentication for extra security.

Tip: You can reset your password via SMS or email if you forget it.

Step 4: Verify Your DigiD With an Activation Code

Once you complete your application, a verification code will be sent by post to your registered Dutch address within 5 working days.

Important: You must activate your DigiD within 20 days of receiving the letter, or the code will expire.

How to Activate Your DigiD

Once you receive the activation letter, follow these steps:

  • Go to the DigiD website and click on "Activate DigiD".

  • Enter the activation code from the letter.

  • Click "Activate", and your DigiD is now ready to use!
